The Holy Angel University has won this year’s National Book Award (Food Category) for “Milk Pigs and Violet Gold: Philippine Cookery,” authored by Singaporean food writer Bryan Koh.
Koh received the award last Saturday night at the awards ceremonies held at the National Museum.
In his acceptance speech, Koh thanked the University’s Center for Kapampangan Studies (CKS) for helping him in his research on Kapampangan dishes and for publishing the Philippine edition of his book.
The Manila Critics Circle (MCC) and the National Book Development Board (NBDB) cited the book’s “handsome three-volume edition” which they described as a “high-definition publishing project.”
“The book’s title immediately presents an unusual take on our country’s cooking, and that is the unique perspective of the entire book,” the MCC and NBDB said in their citation, which was read by literary critic Ruel De Vera. “Singaporean visitor ate our food and saw the extraordinary in our everyday cuisine.”
CKS Director Robby Tantingco and HAU corporate communications consultant Alex Castro accompanied Koh at the ceremonies where they also received a certificate on behalf of the University as publisher of the winning book.
This year’s National Book Award on food writing is the ninth for the University. Previously, it won for the categories of history, translation, biography, professions, science, poetry and non-fiction. The University started publishing books only in 2002 when the Center for Kapampangan Studies was inaugurated.
Three academic officials from Huachiew Chalermprakiet University (HCU) of Thailand visited the University on November 20, 2014 to lay the groundwork for the establishment of an international academic cooperation between the two universities.
The visiting delegation from HCU is composed of Dr. Uraipan Janvanichyanont, vice-president for Academic Affairs, Dr. Somsri Jansom, assistant to the dean, Faculty of Liberal Arts, and Dr. Jonathan Carreon, coordinator for English for Specific Purposes Section.
HCU is the largest Chinese university and one of the top private universities in Thailand. It was founded in 1941 as a nursing and midwifery school by Poh Teck Tung Foundation, itself the biggest Chinese charitable institution in that country which began in 1910.
HCU’s visit to the University is part of its internationalization thrusts and in line with the ASEAN economic integration next year.
HAU Vice-President for Academic Affairs Dr. Jaime Cortez led school administrators in receiving the Thai visitors to the University. In his welcome remarks, Dr. Cortez noted the University’s own internationalization efforts and cited the recent academic cooperative agreements which HAU only recently signed with foreign universities from Korea, Japan, and Australia.
Dr. Janvanichyanont, on the other hand, thanked the University for its hospitality, even as she expressed high hopes for and optimism over the contemplated international linkage.
Other HAU officials who welcomed the Thai guests were Vice-President for External Affairs and Corporate Communications Robert Tantingco, College of Hospitality and Tourism Management Dean Gertrude Tuazon, Academic Research Head Rio Yutuc, Office of International Affairs Head Ronaldo Lapis, and AB Communications Program Chairperson Leslie Manalo.
The HCU officials toured the campus after a round of discussion on the proposed academic cooperation which followed the brief Welcome Program emceed by Ms. Manalo.

PAMPANGA’S Holy Angel University and Baguio’s Berkeley School are
advancing to the SBP-Passerelle National Championships, after emerging
victorious over their toughest rivals in the Luzon regionals, Quezon
Province’s International School for Better Beginnings.
ISBB put on a valiant fight and almost had a double victory in the
twin tournament, losing to 2012 Luzon champions Holy Angel University,
70-62, and to 2013 Nationals third placer Berkeley School, 50-45. Pampanga’s Holy Angel University
triumphs over International School for
Better Beginnings during SBP-Passerelle
Luzon regionals.
Passerelle’s third place went to Baguio’s St. Louis
University-Laboratory High School, thrashing Pangasinan’s Urdaneta City
National High School, 114-73. Pampanga’s Don Bosco Academy, meanwhile,
ranked third in SBP after defeating Pangasinan’s Urdaneta 1 Central
School, 53-39.
Berkeley School also won the Sportsmanship Award for SBP, which
recognizes players and their parents who showed fair play and humility
throughout the tournament. With this award, BEST Center aims to
emphasize that basketball is not all about winning but also fosters
camaraderie and sportsmanship. Being good role models to children,
parents can likewise instill these values by accepting defeat
wholeheartedly and celebrating victories without taunting the losing
team.
Held last Oct, 20 at the University of the Assumption in San Fernando
City, Pampanga, the SBP-Passerelle Luzon regionals saw eight equally
talented teams clash for spots in the nationals. The twin tournament was
also graced by Pampanga Rep. Joseller “Yeng” Guiao, former coach of the
Asian Games Philippine national team and current coach of the Rain or
Shine Elasto Painters in the PBA.
The SBP - Passerelle Luzon winners will advance to the national
championship on Dec. 12 to 14 at the Magis Eagles Arena of Sacred Heart
School - Ateneo De Cebu. They will face other regional winners, which
include NCR’s Xavier School for SBP and Chiang Kai Shek College, the
reigning Passerelle national champions. Mindanao and Visayas regionals,
meanwhile, are set on November 7-10 and Xavier University in Cagayan de
Oro and November 21-24 at Capiz Gym in Roxas City, respectively.

PAMPANGA, Philippines—Colorfully illustrated stampita (prayer cards)
are the latest addition to local efforts to make All Saints’ Day in
Angeles City more of a Catholic holy day.
The prayers cards are exclusively made for more than 600 students who
are dressing up like the holy and martyred men and women of the Roman
Catholic Church, instead of donning costumes of ghouls, ghosts,
vampires, monsters and demons for the Halloween event in the city.
The prayer in the card was given by Msgr. Eugene Reyes while the illustrations were made by Bryan Paguio.
The lives of saints have increasingly been the focus of All Saints’
Day at the Holy Rosary Parish in Angeles City through Bishop Pablo
Virgilio David beginning 2011 and at nearby Holy Angel University (HAU)
since 2012.
Robert Tantingco, executive director of HAU’s Center for Kapampangan
Studies (CKS), said this was because the original intent of Halloween
was to celebrate the saints, not the devils, since it’s the night before
All Saints’ Day.
“Halloween is short for Hallows’ Eve, and hallows is old English for
saints,” he said. Catholics have around 10,000 saints, according to the
the website catholic.org.
Stampita, said Tantingco, are prayer cards commemorating feast days
or religious events. These are distributed to the faithful as mementos
or souvenirs.
In effect, the devotion to saints is revived. What HAU retained is the “trick or treat” part of the western rite. Children go the rounds of offices, receiving chocolates, candies or fruits.
Hymn to saints
Aside from distributing stampita, the center and HAU’s Institute for
Christian Formation are also teaching children to sing the “gosu” or
traditional Kapampangan hymn to saints.
In Pampanga province, the seat of the Augustinian mission starting
1572, there is a gosu for every patron saint of towns and cities.
There’s a hymn for St. Lucy in Sasmuan town, St. Bartholomew in
Magalang town, St. Andrew in Candaba town, St. Catherine in Porac and
Arayat towns, St. Isidore in the village of Dau in Mabalacat City, St.
Nicholas in Macabebe town, St. James in the community of Betis in Guagua
town and St. Michael in Masantol town.
Kapampangan, who converted into Christianity during Spanish colonial
times, practiced the magguso by going from one house to another, singing
and receiving either money, live chicken or vegetables. The money is
used to buy candles for the dead.
The gosu, Tantingco said, is like the “pamangaladua.” In singing the
gosu, the faithful ask a saint to help bring eternal peace to a
departed loved one. The pamangaladua, on the other hand, prays for the
soul of dead members in a family.
“It’s a very touching gesture of communal spirit where neighbors or
strangers offer prayer and entertainment to ease the household’s grief
or longing for a lost loved one,” he said.
“In a way, this explains that mysterious term we learned in
catechism,” the communion of saints,” where the community of those
already in heaven supposedly remains united with the community of those
still on earth,” he said.
CKS published the book, “Gale at Gosu,” by Crispin Cadiang, a former
priest, who composed “Ibpa Mi” (Our Father) and 461 liturgical songs.
The Aguman Talasulat Capampangan (Agtaca or Fraternity of Campampangan
Writers) has been reviving the gosu since 2006.
In the former town of Betis, which was annexed to Guagua in 1904, All
Souls’ Day or “undas” is observed for nine days—a rite that is not
done elsewhere in the country.
Every afternoon, Catholics in Betis light candles, offer flowers and
recite the Rosary. In the middle of the cemetery is a chapel that was
built high to overlook the tombs. At dusk on the ninth day, the priest
celebrates Mass and bless tombs.
Equipped with undisputable skills and uplifting determination, the
Holy Angel University (HAU) Chorale soared as the 1st Runner-up in
Musica EUROPA 6, the annual Far Eastern University (FEU) / European
Union (EU) Choral Competition in the Philippines held last May 22 and 23
at the FEU auditorium.
HAU Chorale was among the various choral groups that vied for the
title in the two division-choral competitions which featured two
categories – the High School Choir Category for secondary level school
choral groups and the Open Choir Category for colleges, university,
church, company, government and other adult choirs.
Other than HAU Chorale’s triumphant success, Philippine Normal
University won as 2nd runner up while the University of Philippine Los
Baños (UPLB) was hailed as the grand champion in the open choir
category. Meanwhile, the Boscorale of Don Bosco – Grand Champion, the
Imus Institute –up, and Pitch Choir – 1st Runner and Makati the Himig
Roseña of Colegio de Santa Rosa Makati – 2nd runner up emerged
victorious for the high school category.
FEUROPA is held to coincide with the Filipinas Heritage and European
Union (EU) Months. It has steadily grown in size and stature since its
inception four year s ago. The choral competition is part of Viva Europa
2012 European Union Cultural Showcase to promote shared cultural
heritage of the EU with the Philippines.
The Office of International Affairs (OIA) is pleased to announce that
Holy Angel University recently established an international academic
cooperation with two foreign universities, namely, Kkottongnae
University (KU) in South Korea and the University of Western Sydney
(UWS) in Australia.
Acting University President Engr. Geromin T. Nepomuceno, Jr. and KU
President Dr. Lee Won Woo signed the Memorandum of Understanding between
HAU and KU during formal signing ceremonies held in the University on
July 8, 2014.
KU was founded by Fr. John Oh, a Korean Catholic priest who received
the Ramon Magsaysay Award in Public Service in 1996. It is the foremost
university in Korea specializing in Social Welfare.
On the other hand, the Memorandum of Understanding between HAU and
UWS was signed by Engr. Nepomuceno and UWS Vice-Chancellor and President
Prof. Barney Glover through an exchange of signatures. The agreement
commenced on August 28, 2014.
UWS was named as one of the world’s best 100 universities under the
age of 50 this year by the influential Times Higher Education, based on
“performance indicators such as research, teaching excellence,
international outlook, connections with industry, and innovation.” It
has a student body of about 42,000.
The agreement between the University and its new foreign higher
education institution-partners aims to foster mutual cooperation in
teaching, curriculum development, training, and research.
It encourages visits by and exchange of faculty, researchers,
academic personnel, and students; exchange of experts and training
programs; exchange of educational literature, research findings, and
publications; joint development of curriculum, teaching materials and
research projects; and participation in seminars, educational congress,
workshops, training courses, and special short-term academic programs.
The development of proposals for collaborative programs with these
foreign partner-universities, which may be coordinated through the OIA,
is highly encouraged from among HAU officials, deans, administrators,
researchers, program chairpersons, faculty members, staff, and students.
For more information, please view an audio-visual presentation on these universities at the OIA or browse the website of KU at (Click Here) and that of the UWS at (Click Here).

Holy Angel University in partnership with its Alumni Batches work
hand in hand through the University’s scholarship program by giving
assistance to deserving students whose station in life limits their
options.
Alumni Batches are invited and encouraged to hold their homecoming in
their Alma Mater. As an act of paying forward and of gratitude for the
blessings received in becoming successful in their chosen field, members
of the alumni donate a certain amount of cash in aid for the education
of worthy students.
Mrs. Nila Yumul, the president of batch 1987 (ARCHANGELS), met with
the Scholarship Office and discussed the means of providing scholarship
to students. As an initial act of partnering, the batch donated
ninety-nine thousand pesos (P99,000.00) to the HAU Scholarship Endowment
Fund.
Batch 1961 (ANGELITES), sponsoring two Teacher Education students by
giving 100% tuition grant, entered into a Memorandum of Agreement with
HAU. Mr. Arthur Buan, the batch representative, emphasized that it is
the mission of their batch to uplift academically inclined students
particularly enrolled in the Teacher Education Program. By helping
future teachers, it would have a justified effect as educators are
entrusted to the formation of the mind and hearts of thousands of
students.
Both Batch 1963 (EVERGREENS) and Batch 1964 (ASTRONAUTS) had recently
celebrated their 50th year anniversary inside the University. The
EVERGREENS, represented by Mrs. Celia Timbol, donated one hundred
thousand pesos (P100,000.00) to the HAU Endowment Fund. On the other
hand, the ASTRONAUTS also donated one hundred thousand pesos
(P100,000.00) to the school’s scholarship program.
Through their president, Mr. Rennier Perez, Batch 2002, (GENYSIS)
also donated an amount of one hundred thousand pesos (P100,000.00) to
the HAU Scholarship Endowment Fund. This batch was considered as the
first and youngest batch who donated in HAU’s Scholarship Program. They
had held their reunion in the campus last December 2012.
Holy Angel University through its Scholarships and Grants Office is
very grateful to these Alumni Batches as they had supported HAU’s
mission of making quality education accessible to deserving students.

United Kingdom.
Holy Angel University, the biggest Catholic school in the region,
will celebrate Halloween this year with a unique twist: instead of
vampires, demons and ghosts, participants will wear saints’ costumes.
When the University first held a similar event in 2012, it became the banner photo of the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
According to Robby Tantingco, Vice President for External Affairs,
the event is part of the University’s advocacy to promote a more
Catholic celebration of Halloween.
“The original intent of Halloween was to celebrate the saints, not
the devils because it’s the night before All Saints Day,” Tantingco
says. “Halloween is short for Hallows’ Eve, and hallows is old English
for saints. Somehow we allowed the dark spirits to take over the themes and
images of the celebration of what is supposedly a Catholic holy day.” More than 600 pre-school and grade school pupils of the University’s
Basic Education Department are expected to participate in the annual
event. The Center for Kapampangan Studies and the Institute for
Christian Formation will also add other spiritual and cultural elements
to the celebration, like distributing estampitas (prayer cards) and
singing gosu, the traditional Kapampangan hymns to saints.
